I don’t have the same rosy view of the 90s and 2000s that some of my peers and the younger generations seem to have. I feel like a lot of the positive aspects of the past always felt like they didn’t make sense, how could they exist given how awful everything was, and it’s easy to see now. Because capitalism doesn’t work, but for a little while, when it was fashionable to be civic minded; the arts and culture, early childhood development and enrichment, and social programs were considered worth investing in and it made the conditions less crushing.

Now, it’s almost impossible to find places to go and do nothing and to just hang out. I know lots of people have discussed this already, but it still doesn’t seem to change anything in our lives. We can never really be alone, with our thoughts, or the ability to just exist in the world without being surveilled.
